The Municipality of Lima and the C40 Cities Finance Facility will be collaborating to connect the existing cycling infrastructure between the districts of San Juan de Lurigancho and Lima Cercado by constructing a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the Río Rímac. The bridge will provide safe and direct cycling infrastructure for residents of San Juan de Lurigancho, the most populous district in Lima, to travel into Lima Cercado, the central business district. This project aims to reduce congestion, pollution, and noise on roads in San Juan de Lurigancho.

By shifting away from private cars and towards sustainable transport, not only will this plan reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Lima’s transport sector, but there will also be considerable health benefits. By reducing traffic, this project seeks to tackle the biggest source of urban air pollution, which drives up the risk of premature birth, asthma, cancer, and lung and heart conditions.

Active travel (walking and cycling) is far better for people’s health - helping to reduce depression, anxiety, stress, obesity, and chronic disease. Reducing noise pollution also has health benefits, reducing sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment in children and cardiovascular disease. Alongside allowing easier access for residents of San Juan de Lurigancho to employment in Lima Cercado, building the bridge will in itself create a number of good, green jobs.

Cycling is a low-cost alternative to driving, particularly benefiting low-income residents, elderly people, women and children. Cycling increases people’s independence, can help ease the burden of care work, and can improve access to jobs and education. Fewer cars also means safer streets, with less crime and fewer road accidents.

San Juan de Lurigancho is the largest district in Lima but currently lacks cycling infrastructure despite high trip rates to the main employment areas – particularly Lima Cercado. The cycling connection forms part of Lima's ambitious plan to develop 640 km of cycling lanes until 2030 and to promote cycling and walking throughout the city. This project will help transform San Juan de Lurigancho, giving its residents cleaner air, a safer environment, and better access to employment. With this project, Lima will become a truly bike-friendly city, boosting the health and economic opportunities of its residents.
